New Cartridge Developments

Watch for information on our new line of HPI-SPC cartridges

                         6.5 HPI-SPC

6.3 HPI-SPC   New data will be posted soon ! Watch for it!

                    and more in this series

The point of this series is that they are all variations on the 6.8 Rem SPC parent brass with no special dies required - just use bushing dies with the appropriate size bushing - one set of dies for all calibers.

The 6.5 HPI-SPC has slightly more case capacity than the 6.5 Grendel and will give equal performance. And you have the choice of large or small rifle primers depending on whose brass you purchase. The cartridge has better proportions  for more reliable feeding and the simplicity of easily available brass and a standard die set. Just have us chamber your barrel in this caliber and enjoy the enhanced performance.

We have some preliminary test data with a rifle with a 25 inch Broughton barrel

            85 gr. Sierra         3225 fps

           100gr. Sierra         2945 fps

107gr. Sierra            not tested expect 2800 fps

119gr. Cauterucio    not tested expect 2650 fps

           120gr. Sierra           2645 fps

           129gr. Cauterucio   2530 fps

Preliminary testing with the 20 inch Broughton barrel

            85gr. Sierra            3108 fps

           100gr. Sierra           2865fps

           120gr. Sierra           2547fps

           129gr. Cauterucio   2452fps

The 95gr. Hornady Vmax at mag length has a BC of .365 and a velocity of 3078 fps.

The 119gr. Cauterucio VLD at single load length has a BC of .595 and a velocity of 2700 fps.

Both loads showed excellent accuracy and this should be a winning combination in an AR-15 frame match rifle.

Our thanks to Jon Wilcox for being the sponsor of this caliber and sharing the financial risks of this project as well as helping to develop the computer generated projections prior to testing.

Good news!!!  Haig Derderian has come forward as the sponsor of the 6.3 HPI-SPC caliber project. Haig is a double distinguished in rifle and pistol and will now make his mark on the shooting world with a NRA match rifle. Watch here for the results of this project.

and also the

6.0 mm NBR-AL for the AR-10 rifles series

This cartridge is about a 1/4 inch longer than the 6 Norma BR and about a 1/4 inch shorter than the 243 Winchester - it is the best balance between 6mm performance and acceptable barrel life in a 6mm target rifle. Watch this site for more data as we test this cartridge.

Dr. Stefan Rose is the sponsor of this caliber project. Thank you Doc !!

                                                                Range Testing the 6.5 HPI-SPC
.550 Group
As I sit here on December 2nd looking out at 12 inches of new snow I fondly remember the Friday after Thanksgiving. A beautiful fall day with temperatures of about 60 and almost no wind.

I got out to the range to do some load testing with the 6.5 HPI-SPC and 119 gr. Cauterucio bullets.

Everything in the spectrum of loadings that I had chosen shot very well – nice small round groups. I was also learning how to properly use the new front rest that I had gotten for my birthday. My technique improved as the afternoon progressed – but I still have a ways to go.

The best load produced the 5 shot group shown here - .550 inches center to center. I believe that we will be able to do even better than this as this 26 inch SS barrel further breaks in and my technique improves and we try more new loadings.

This test run was done with Remington brass and large rifle primers. We will repeat this series with Hornady brass and small rifle primers. Watch for the results.

If you do a Google web search of "Norma" the first entry you find will take you to Norma’s ballistic calculator.

The Winchester .308 cartridge with 168 gr. Sierra bullets has been a mainstay of the target shooting world for many years now.

Norma has a Diamond Line loading of this cartridge and you can find it in their rifle cartridges table.

You can get the ballistics of the 6.5 HPI-SPC by entering .595 BC and 119 gr. weight in the "define your own bullet" selection.

Elevation change from 200 yards to 600 yards is 15.75 minutes with the .308 but only 12.4 minutes with the 6.5 HPI-SPC.

10 mph wind drift at 600 yards is 35.0 inches with the .308 but only 24.4 inches with the 6.5 HPI-SPC.

This is a significant improvement over a time tested cartridge and along with shooting small round groups clearly demonstrates the usefulness of the 6.5 HPI-SPC in an AR-15 frame rifle.

Hope you enjoyed this. mike bykowski
